Behavior is an aspect of the functioning of an organism, including their overt behavior, thought, emotion, and physiological activity. These functions may or may not be directly observable. Behavior is a broader sense, influences both heredity and environmental aspects.

Behavior modification is an approach which focuses on observable and measurable behavior, it is concerned with a method of changing overt behavior rather than on understanding subjective feelings, unconscious process or motivations The essence of behavior modification is the systematic application of the principles of psychology such as learning, motivation, perception, etc.

IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOUR:

  1. Violent and destructive behavior: Example- Tearing of book, breaking objects, throwing objects, etc.
  2. Temper tantrums: Example- Rolls on the floor, screams, and cries excessively, etc.
  3. Self-destructive behaviors: Example – Bangs head, scratches self, pulls own hair, bites self, peels skin, wounds, etc.
  4. Repetitive Behavior: Example- Rocks body, Nods head, shakes parts of the body repeatedly.
  5. Odd Behavior: Example- Smile, laughs or talks to self without reason, collects rubbish, etc.
  6. Overactivity: Example- Does not sit at one place for the required time, does not complete the task at hand, etc.
  7. Rebellious behavior: Example- Refuse to obey commands, challenge and break the rules, etc.
  8. Antisocial behavior: Example – Steals, Cheat in games, lies or twists the truth, blames others, etc.
  9. Fears: Example- Fear of places, persons, animals, objects, etc.
  10. Misbehavior with others: Example- Grab objects from others, spits on others, etc.

TECHNIQUES FOR INCREASING DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR:

  1. Promote the desirable behavior by reinforcement: Your kid adapts best when fortification is:
    Immediate
    Characteristic of the circumstance
    Frequent
    Unsurprising
  2. Instructing the desirable behavior by setting up situations when it can happen. Your kid adapts best when:
    Expectations are concrete, small
    Rewards are unsurprising and predictable
    He/she works on performing out the behavior well
    He/she rehearses the behavior with the same number of individuals, in the same number of spots, as would be prudent
  3. Foreseeing and getting ready for “high-chance” circumstances. High-risk circumstances are those that are probably going to exhibit a social test to your kid. Instances of high-hazard circumstances are those that include advances, change, and unstructured time. You can improve the probability that great conduct will happen in these circumstances by making an anticipated structure for your kid.
    Predictability is established through:
    Advance preparation
    Visual schedules
    Positive routines

REASONS FOR PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR:-

  • Attention seeking behavior
  • Self-stimulation factors
  • Skill deficit factor
  • Escapism
  • Tangible factor

MANAGEMENT OF PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR:-

Behavior management is based on the understanding of the antecedent and consequence of the behavior. There are various techniques to be used for managing problem behavior as per requirement.

  1. Model ideal behavior: Demonstrate the behavior which is appropriate for the child according to you.
    Example:.Use polite language
    Maintain eye contact
    Keep phones in your pockets
    Let one another speak uninterrupted
  2. Let students explore their environment: Encourage all students to help you build classroom rules and explore their environment
  3. Avoid giving punishment to the students: Avoid punishing the student because punishment can harm the relationship between you and students.
    Convey verbally is the best method for any disturbance
  4. Encourage initiative: Promote growth mindset by allowing students to work ahead and deliver short presentations to share take-away points.
  5. Offer praise: Praise can motivate the students to do the tasks with their higher potential.
  6. Using a multisensory approach: Using different types of senses in teaching so that each student easily grasp the concept and make learning better.
  7. Hold parties: Throw an occasional classroom party to acknowledge student hard work so that they feel motivated.
  8. Give tangible rewards: Reward specific students in front of the class, as another motivational and behavior-reinforcement technique.
  9. Gamify personal learning plans: Motivate students by learning as play way method.
